Governing the Data Catalog

Data stewards add business context to catalog assets, making them more discoverable for catalog consumers. Governance tools include glossary terms, tags, domains, and direct asset updates.

The catalog automatically collects technical metadata from connected external systems — identifying what data exists, its schema, source, and lineage. Data stewards add business context on top of that collected metadata.

Catalog governance tools include:

• Glossary terms to standardize business terminology and link it to relevant assets
• Tags to classify assets by topic, sensitivity, or use case
• Domains to group assets by business area or ownership

• Asset record updates to correct or supplement collected metadata

• Update a data asset
  Edit catalog asset metadata to add business context, improve discoverability, and provide additional information.

  Create tags that can be applied to data assets for classification and categorization.
